Mental Health Courses

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health course is an excellent introduction into the nature and scope of mental health issues amongst our children and adolescents.

It has become more prominent recently, the level off mental illness and conditions that may affect children at various stages of their development and that help needs to be organised so that they adjust into adulthood as easily as possible.

Lesson Structure: 
  1. Nature and Scope of Mental Health – looking at the difference between adult, child and adolescent mental health. What we mean by mental health?
  2. Childhood Depression; and how this changes when they reach adolescence. Signs, symptoms and treatments.
  3. Anxiety Disorders - separation, generalised, school phobias, social phobias and their signs, symptoms and treatment.
  4. Tic Disorders - Tourette's – the signs, symptoms and treatment.
  5. Brain Disorders (Injury & Disease) – the signs, symptoms and treatment.
  6. Other Disorders - Motor Disorders, Elimination Disorders, Feeding & Eating Disorders; - the signs, symptoms and treatment.
  7. Environmental Problems - Abuse and Neglect, Relationship Problems – the signs, symptoms and treatment.
  8. Problems of Adolescence - Anorexia, Bulimia, Substance Use, Family Conflict – the signs, symptoms and treatment.
  9. Holistic and Alternative Approaches to Treatment - this should be a general approach to dealing with children & adolescents i.e. not directed at specific conditions
  10. Special Project - student chooses something of interest
Aims - the learning objectives of the course: 
  • Determine what mental health is and the differences between child and adolescent mental health conditions.
  • Understand what kind of mental health conditions are common for this age group such as, depression and anxiety disorders.
  • Acknowledge the signs, symptoms and treatment of a range of mental health disorders so you are able to provide assistance to those in need around you.
  • Understand the transition from childhood into adolescence and how this may change the nature of the mental health condition in the patient.
  • Learn about the holistic and alternative approaches to treatment for a range of mental health conditions.
  • Develop a project around a mental health condition to be able to determine the nature of the illness, its signs and symptoms and then how it can be treated.
